Nic Durston: South Bank and Waterloo Apprenticeships

post-image 9th May 2016

Dear all members of South Bank BID,

We know that Sadiq Khan’s election as Mayor of London will herald a number of new initiatives and shifts in policy.  When representatives of South Bank BID Board and members of South Bank Employers’ Group met Sadiq and his team last year, he spoke about his plans for “Skills for Londoners” – recognising the shortage of skills which many businesses and employers face, and the challenge of accessing talent – particularly local – to some of the growing parts of London’s economy.  We will be picking up these issues with Sadiq’s new team once in place.  We know that South Bank businesses have a commitment to employ local people in a range of jobs across all sectors, whether hotel and hospitality, food and beverage, culture and arts, visitor attractions, retail and office – such is the diversity and range of the South Bank economy.  But we know that the policy and funding landscape can be complex, and that businesses need some support and guidance in navigating their way through current and new opportunities.  The Apprenticeships agenda is an example of this, and it’s why we are working with We Are Waterloo Business Improvement District—in collaboration with Lambeth and Southwark Councils—in hosting a breakfast briefing event on Friday 27th May at 08.30 to give local businesses the chance to find out about how they can access many of the opportunities that apprenticeships can bring. The event will be held at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, and we are extremely grateful to Park Plaza for hosting this event. To find out more and to register, please follow this link.

In other news, the South Bank BID Board meet next week to discuss delivery plans for the remainder of the year, and to look at progress with some of the key initiatives that we are looking to introduce in 2016, including a Loyalty Programme – to be delivered in partnership with We Are Waterloo – and to get an insight into some of the research into visitors’ experience of South Bank and what it offers.  We’ll be doing a further update on this, once the research concludes in September.  And finally, please do take the time to complete our survey on how you rate South Bank BID and the services that it helps to deliver.

All the best,

Nic
