Award for Guys’ & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust

Congratulations to Guy’s and St Thomas’ who have been named Work Experience Placement Provider of the Year at the Mayor’s Fund for London Employment awards. Read more here.

The  new 14 story Cancer Centre at Guy’s, due to open in the autumn of 2016, has now reached its full height, marked by a ‘topping out’ ceremony on  10th March. Read more here.

New South Bank Attraction

Shrek’s Adventure! London, opening in County Hall next to SEA LIFE London Aquarium and the London Dungeon, Merlin’s latest London project, will open in July 2015.  Find out more about Shrek’s Adventure! London here.

St John’s Church at Waterloo: Waterloo Festival

Communities are coming together to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo with a series of exciting events from 15th – 21st June 2015. The main venue for the Festival is St John’s Church at Waterloo. Read more here.

Development News:

  • Shell Site redevelopment

The redevelopment of the Shell site, approved by Lambeth Council and the Mayor in 2013, and subsequently by the Secretary of State for Communities after a public inquiry in June 2014 has been subject to judicial review proceedings. These are now the subject of an appeal which will be heard in July 2015.

  • Elizabeth House redevelopment

This was also the subject of a judicial review brought by English Heritage and Westminster City Council on heritage grounds which was turned down by the court in March 2014. The proposals were resubmitted to Lambeth Council and approved again in December 2014 and the Secretary of State has subsequently ruled that Lambeth may determine the application. The grant of formal planning permission for the scheme is expected shortly.  For further development updates click here.

Local Transport News:

  • 20 mph Plans from Westminster Bridge to Southwark Street – Transport for London (TfL) has announced plans to trial a 20mph speed limit on Westminster Bridge, York Road, Stamford Street and Southwark Street throughout 2015 and 2016.   • More Hydrogen Buses Proposed to the RV1 Route The Mayor of London has announced plans to add two more fuel cell buses to the RV1 route, which links Covent Garden with Tower Gateway via South Bank. RV1, the first new bus route in London for many years, came about as a result of SBEG lobbying and initial sponsorship. Read more here.
  • Construction Impact of new Cycle Superhighways – Construction of the new segregated cycle superhighways has begun including work on Blackfriars Road. The works are due to be complete by the end of 2015. Find out more about the work taking place on the TfL website.
  • Possible Upgrades to Festival Pier Announced by TfL – Transport for London has commissioned a feasibility study into how commercial opportunities could fund infrastructure improvements to Festival Pier in South Bank. Read more here.
